The story of the Pumpkin Fairy

It is Halloween, the busiest time of the year for witches and fairies, as we all know.

There is one wee little fairy, however, who is particularly excited. She is the Pumpkin Fairy.

You see, the Pumpkin Fairy has a really sweet tooth, and she ADORES candy and chocolate. But she only gets to eat them once a year, on Halloween night, as the children share their sweet treasures with her. And, to thank them for their generosity, the lovely Pumpkin Fairy leaves something special behind....

Our family tradition on Halloween night is to go trick-or-treating, dressed in our finest witches and wizards’ costumes, candy basket in hand, just like everyone else. My children excitedly watch their baskets filling up quickly with all sorts of candies - the kind of treats they only get to enjoy this time of the year!

I must admit, I don’t always find it easy to turn a blind eye on the amount of sugar they devour on that night (and subsequent days). Several years ago, however, a dear friend introduced us to the Pumpkin Fairy. She has been part of our Halloween celebrations ever since!

When we get home from trick-or-treating, my kids spread out their sugary treasures on the table and admire them as if they were rare gems! I kid you not :)

But when bedtime comes, they pick several treats from their mound and place them in the Pumpkin Fairy House we have carved the previous day. We light up a candle - which will be replaced with a tea light overnight - write a lovely note, and place the lot on our windowsill for the Pumpkin Fairy to collect.

The Pumpkin Fairy has a really sweet tooth and she delights in all the treats the children give her on that night. In return, she leaves behind something special for them - a small toy, crayons, a special crystal. And sprinkles of fairy dust, of course.

It is such a lovely tradition, my children always wake up excited to see what they will find. And I find some comfort in the fact that there is less sugar in our house :)

Will the Pumpkin Fairy pay a visit to your home this Halloween?

Make her a special house, fill it with delicious treats, and wait for the magic to happen.
