Accessibility & Inclusion Statement
At Big Scrub Nature Play, we believe that the wonders of the natural world should be available to every child, regardless of their physical, sensory, or cognitive needs. We are committed to fostering an environment where all families and educators feel welcome, supported, and included.
Our Commitment to Neurodiversity
We recognize that every child processes the world differently. Our Forest school approach and nature-based storytelling are inherently flexible, allowing us to meet children where they are.
-
Sensory-aware facilitation: We understand that the outdoors can be sensory-rich. We provide "quiet zones" within our natural spaces, including sensory swings and a "calm reading corner". We regularly adapt our songs and stories to suit the energy and sensory thresholds of the group.
-
Predictable rhythms: To support students who thrive on routine, our sessions follow a consistent rhythm, helping to reduce anxiety and build confidence through familiarity.
-
Flexible engagement: We welcome all forms of participation. Whether a child prefers to be actively engaged in an activity (such as circle time, group games and storytelling) or observing from the perimeter while deep in sensory play, their way of "being" in nature is honored and celebrated.
Physical Access at Noosa Botanic Gardens
We facilitate our sessions within the beautiful Noosa Botanic Gardens on Gubbi Gubbi country. While we embrace the "wild" elements of nature, we strive to make our meeting points and main activity areas as accessible as possible.
-
The gardens feature a mix of paved bitumen paths and gravel walkways. Most of our primary nature play sessions and storytelling circles are located in areas accessible by strollers and mobility aids.
-
Accessible parking spaces are available near the main entrance of the gardens on Lake Macdonald Drive.
-
Accessible toilet facilities are located within the garden grounds, in close proximity to our regular gathering spots.
Digital Accessibility
We are continuously working to improve the accessibility of bigscrubnatureplay.com. Our goal is to ensure our digital resources, including our Storytelling with Nature online courses, are compatible with screen readers and assistive technologies. We aim to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) to ensure our site is perceivable, operable, and understandable for all.
